The Traveling ACEO

When your weeks are filled with appointments, of every kind, it can be quite difficult to create...and that's the way it has been these past few weeks. Whether it has been for me or the kids, I just have not been at my studio to create for a good portion of every day. No fear! These are the times that I especially work on ACEO's. Ahhhh, the wonderful, magnificent, tiny, travel worthy ACEO. How perfect.

I have a great little carry case (as seen here in this post) that holds almost everything I need to get ACEO's started (and many times finished). So, while waiting in waiting rooms, at the park, or wherever, I can pull out my supplies discretely and work on an ACEO. The kids even know to make sure, before we leave the house, that I have my carry case with me. I don't leave home without it!

The pre-prepped watercolor cards are often great inspiration and they are perfect for backgrounds to the multi-layered pieces, too. Oh, how I love the this little thing called an ACEO!

The Journey of Growth

Direction. Diversity. Dilemma. Decisions. Growing! Growth is good. And for me lately, a bit challenging. For some time now, quite a while actually, I have been struggling to 'find' my artistic me. To hone in on what is my strength, my passion, my style. Who I really am as an artist.

It's time to GROW.

I am torn. As an artist, while I work on one medium or style, I am dreaming about another. I can't wait to try a new technique or color combination. Creating for me is like dinner. Many foods. Many ways to prepare them. I just don't want the same meal every single night. But yet, I love it all. This is my dilemma. And this can be critical when you want your work to be recognized as your own. I have numerous pieces of work, in all styles and mediums, at Green-n-Groovy a local gallery downtown and Lisa, the owner, tells me all the time that patrons are shocked and amazed when they come across my tags, realizing that they were all created by the same artist. Yet, I sell pieces from every collection of work. Advantage or detriment? They like the work, they buy the work, but do they know my name?

I create because I have to. It is who I am. I am not an artist that will ever only work in one medium or one style. I experience just as much excitement with a palette full of color as I do with a palette limited to only black and white. Choosing one material or craft or technique would be like choosing only one of my children. It is impossible to choose. I love them all. I have spent the past year or so really reading and studying many other artists and their work. Examining the diversities, the successes, the many aspects of working as a professional artist. 'Don't rely on income from only one source'. 'Create a recognizable style that becomes your own'. 'Brand yourself'. 'Create what you love'. 'Don't limit yourself'.....and a partridge in a pear tree (hmmm, just thought of a design idea...oops, sorry...back to what I was saying). Growth sure does make my head hurt!

Ultimately, there are some things that will have to change. I have to make, perhaps, some difficult decisions in both creative and business areas of my life. It is imperative that, as an artist, I do NOT forsake anything that fills my creative cup. As a business woman, it's time to establish a specific artistic business plan and commit to it.

I'm ready!

I am still working through the many details and I know limiting myself could be dangerous, too. I don't want that. I also know that I need to hone in on my strengths, determine what sells, what could reach a wider range of customers/clients, what could expand into larger venues, etc., etc. Whew! and Egad! So be forewarned, you will start seeing some changes around here, some restructure, some redesign, less of some work, more of others (perhaps combining mediums and styles), probably even some test runs here and there. I want to go where everybody knows my name. I look forward to feedback, too. Inquiring minds want to know. Giveaways and interviews are also things I have wanted to implement for some time now. Check. It's on the list. I feel like this is the first day of the rest of my successful creative life! How exciting is that? It's very exciting! Now let's get this party started....

Changes Are Upon Us

Change is good! Right? Well, around here, everything seems to be changing lately, and at warp speed!

My beautiful Hannah just had her 12th birthday and I swear it was just yesterday when I brought her home from the hospital. I know I'll still be saying that when she's 22, but for now I am in utter shock that she is already 12. I am watching her become a young lady...scary and beautiful all at once.

And then there's Nathaniel, my little man! 6 going on 26! He's graduating from Kindergarten this week, and as it looks, will be heading to 2nd grade. I am really going to have to get a new pair of roller skates to keep up with these guys. I really didn't know I could love anyone so much! They are my life.

For Hannah's sleepover birthday party, I had purchased some air drying modeling clay that I thought would be fun for the girls (6 of them) to create some little sculptures, pendants, etc with the clay, and then paint them the second day. Well, let's just say that when you get six 12-year-old girls together for a sleepover, getting them to sit still for a 'project' is a bit hit-and-miss. I missed! No biggie, more for me. It's been a while since I had played with the clay and it didn't take long before I was HOOKED...again! I sculpted several little figures and the owl is the only one finished so far. I am not exactly sure what I am going to do with him though. Thought I might turn him into a brooch or pendant, or some sort of mixed media piece, maybe. I have some 3.5"x3.5"canvas covered blocks I made a while back that might be fun to add the head and paint in the rest of the body on the canvas. Hmmmm. Many choices, but one thing for sure is...I LOVED making these. I LOVED working with the clay again. I so feel some changes happening.

This little painting I did last week. I have wanted to create a series of 'boudoir' pieces, of sorts, for a while now...like purses, shoes, lipstick, etc. I added the gold leaf which I think really makes it pop and interesting, too. I also have some fun ideas for the kitchen as well. So many ideas, 24 hours in a day....what's a girl to do?

And here is one more. A painting that I have been working on this past week that isn't finished yet. He is much bigger, 20"x20". The Bug-Eyed ACEO from my last post actually inspired this piece and I am considering some new ideas, so we'll just have to wait to see how it gets finished. I don't have the photos ready, but I have some pen and ink/watercolors to show you, too. It's been a busy, messy week and it really shows in my studio. My mind feels a little messy lately, too. Ultimately, I think I am headed for some CHANGE...but I will have to talk more about that next time. See you then......

Just a quick post of a new ACEO. I did this one recently using my layered technique; one layer in watercolor, one layer in pen and ink, with the pen and ink cut out and adhered to the watercolor. I really think he is so cute!

I also love the 3D effect....2 pieces of artwork that come together and become one. These images just do not do them justice. They are so cool to look at in person. The little bits of shadow the second layer creates really adds great interest.

New Old Blue Shoes

Just a quick update to post a recent pair of shoes I did that I just love! They start out as a normal pair of shoes, old or new, any color....and LOTS of scraps and embellishments.

I love the look of raw edges and jean material can really provide that. Not to mention, a simple pair of jeans can have great edges, seams, snaps, even the belt loops can be used as amazing design elements.

The 'text' was painted on scraps of fabrics for some artistic contrast and further embellishments came from huge stash of fun. They really turned out amazing and they look great with a pair of white capris. Gotta get back to more fun!

Back In The Saddle...

Time to do some catch up! Since our last meeting I have simply been trying to recover from my arm injury with physical therapy and recovering from two bouts of the flu. The most recent really kicked my....well, you know...and kept me in bed for over a week. I guess I just needed some overdue rest and, boy, did I get some! Feeling like a new woman again and ready to get busy!

During my time of forced rest, relaxation and antibiotics....I was able to finish a few small pieces. Even when sick, I just can't not create!! Impossible. Mostly pen and ink since I could easily work on them while in bed whenever I felt up to it. 'Wise Owl' was so meditative to create, as well as just plain fun. 'Three Fish' that I did a couple months ago was the same way...fun and meditative to do, fun and meditative to look at....I know there will be many more that follow this style. There are quite a few ACEO's that I did as well, but I still have to prep them. So, 'till next time.....

New Work, New Shows, New Injury

It's time to do some catch up and there is quite a bit, so lets get started. Before anything else, I would like to take a moment and honor my good friend Christina Marie Coyle

who passed away February 18, 2011 at the young age of 44, from a long and courageous battle with Lymphoma Cancer. She was such a beautiful person and left behind her wonderful husband, Mike and beautiful 8 year old son, Danny. I can honestly say I was truly blessed to know her! I first met her when we were in our 20's, became immediate friends, had TONS of fun together and I was blessed to extend that relationship to her sister, Julie, whom lives in New York. Julie and I, through this horrible tragedy have been able to reconnect again and I am so thankful. Julie and I were very close for many years and I look forward to having her in my life again! We have come to realize the old saying IS true...Life IS too short and you just never know when someone you care about is gone. I do not want to ever regret not having the chance to let someone know how important they are to me. May God bless Mike and Danny and be with them during this most difficult time in their lives! My heart is broken but I know that she is with the Lord and at peace and no longer in pain.

After the emotional funeral, I was a mess and numb. I felt like I needed to stay busy so later that night, I decided to put some boxes in the attic. While I was on the ladder, the ladder gave way, shifted to the right and down I went. Trying to lessen my fall, I grabbed onto the door ledge with my right arm and came crashing down. Bruised from head to toe, I realized I had hurt my right arm pretty bad. No rotator cuff tear, but fluid, bursitis, tendonitis and in horrible pain for a month. I actually couldn't use my right arm at all until about 1 1/2 week ago! I had recieved some amazing prayer 2 Sundays ago at church and Monday morning, I was actually able to put on my clothes by myself for the first time since the accident. God is good! I continue to improve every day, and although not completely healed and still have some pain, God has provided me amazing strength and healing and I am grateful.

Somehow during all of this (and just prior) I have created many new works and many of these have sold. I am just loving every bit of it. It never gets old hearing that someone loves my work and better yet... purchases it...to be loved forever. It is an absolute honor.
I was also recently blessed with numerous stories written about me by Tom Hall from the Examiner.com. You can read them here. The press has been wonderful and again, I am more than honored!! I just finished a small art show at the Verona in Naples, Florida this past weekend and it was so exciting. The positive feedback was almost overwhelming for me. My sales were excellent (even though I felt like I wasn't completely prepared due to the recent shoulder injury and my printers' print heads deciding to die out this past week) and looks like there will be an outrageous amount of commission work I can look forward to. My work (I brought a wide representation) appealed to those of ALL ages and many returned to my tables repeatedly. It was a wonderful feeling and I can't wait for the next show!

This coming Friday, I have been honored once again as the Featured Artist for Green-n-Groovy during the amazing Art Walk held in our Fort Myers River District downtown. Although I will be presenting works of all mediums and styles, I will be demonstrating the ACEO using Micron pen and the Zentangle techniques. There was so much interest during the art show from this past weekend for the ACEO card. Viewers were intrigued and curious. They enjoyed picking them up, being able to purchase affordable works of art, and just wanted to know more. I love that!

Along with my paintings and illustrations, I have also been working in textiles, too. Upcycling the shoes are a blast and they are definitely a statement piece! Have had several custom orders for them and am excited about creating an entire line of painted and fabric upcycled shoes.

The handbags are actually from upcycled upholstery fabric swatch books. I absolutely love the fabrics. They are full of texture, color, patterns...and matched with embellishments, leathers, suedes, etc...the purses become an artistic statement piece as well. They spark a lot of conversation and I love that I get to create all of this.

There is much to do still and I have numerous other photos to prepare for posting, as well. I am not certain whether I will complete this before Friday, but I will do my best!! I love where all of this is taking me and look forward to seeing what's around the bend.

Busy, Busy January!

Well, I am going to try to catch up a bit. There is so much to share, I am not certain where to start. One of the most exciting event is the solo trunk show (me) next week at an amazing boutique here in town. Barbara, the owner of Mirage Boutique, contacted me after coming across my work and the rest is history! Barbara and the store are amazing. I secretly coveted almost everything in the store! I had a few delays due to health and kids, but it's finally coming together and I am so excited!

It will be just in time for Valentines Day so I am really trying to create accordingly. Lots of hearts and feelings of love and dreams. I am also creating for Green-n-Groovy at the same time and this amazing art filled weekend downtown. Fort Myers Art Walk is tonight and then two days of the Southwest Florida Premier ArtFest Fort Myers which is an event not to be missed!

I also created the new logo for Green-n-Groovy and I have to say, I really love it.
And it looks great on the glass doors. The store is amazing! So many great artists, many of them using organic or recycled/upcycled materials....and all of them groovy!

I did have time to do some little pieces, too (ACEO's). They are always fun to do and allows me to experiment without committing to a huge piece. I really enjoyed working with the collage and I know this style will creep into my art more and more.

There really is much more to show but it will just have to wait until next time. Blessings to all!

Happy New Year Everyone!
2011 is already showing itself to be quite busy and among other things, I am really trying to clean up anything 'unfinished' from 2010. I thought I should at least post a few of the most recent ACEO's I did in 2010. December was CRAZY for me (as I am sure it has been for many!!) so the one way I could make sure to always create was to carry my little travel kit with blank ACEO cards and my Micron ink pen...ready to use at any down-time (waiting rooms, taking the kids to the park, really bad traffic, etc) away from my studio. Let's just say there was A LOT of pen-and-ink work in December! Not a bad thing though. I really love pen work and I love ACEO's, so it was a successful month, too.

At the end of 2010, I finished everything that was commissioned and started on several new pieces. The kids and I worked on several artistic gifts for family and friends and I created some random artwork, too. All the while, my mind is filling fast with all that I want to do in 2011. I am really looking forward to all that lies ahead (regardless of what my life looks like right now). Something that I have wanted to do for quite some time is some sort of 'ART A DAY' venture, challenging me to create every single day for an entire year. Well, I was reminded of it recently from another member of the ACEO Etsy Street Team that I belong to. So I decided, what the heck...let's do it! Since I wanted to be as realistic as possible I decided I really needed to work small...for some days are just simply filled to the max. ACEO's are my answer! These would allow me to try new techniques, styles, mediums, etc. and they would be small and hopefully quicker. The problem will be getting them posted, but I'll do my best. I have already created the first 4 (still have to do today's) so I am off to photograph them and get them posted. I will try to do all 4 today and since I often do ACEO's very late at night, each piece will probably be posted the following day. I hope to stay faithful regardless of what is going on each day. I hope.

'Invitation Only' Art Festival

In the chaos of this day - and believe me, there has been a lot - I forgot to mention some further good news...I recently received an invitation to participate in the Splash Art Festivals outside of Atlanta, Georgia this coming year. These are 'invitation only' festivals and I am so excited I was included!! Looks like there will be over 170 national and regional artists and, of course, me! I was looking at the artists from this year and many were very well known and accomplished artists. So exciting. There are 2 festivals, one in May 2011 (the Dunwoody Art Festival) and one in October 2011 (the Norcross Art Fest). I accepted the invitation for the Norcross Art Fest in October. I thought that October 2011 would give me more time for inventory and I do hope to have a few other art festivals/art shows under my wing by then. Not to mention, I bet the weather will be delightful!
Amazing how things are starting to happen! I wonder what's ahead that I don't even know about yet...only time will tell! Stay tuned!

Featured On FAT (Featured Art Tuesday) Artist Spotlight

Happy Holidays to all! It has been so busy here in our household, as I am sure it has been for everyone! Finally, it is all starting to settle down a bit...just a bit. One very big gift for me (that I have been trying and trying to find just a few minutes to post) is that I was featured on a wonderful blog, Beth's Artworx in which every Tuesday...

Beth Niquette 'showcases inspiring Artists and provides a forum for all Artists to share their work with one another'. She calls it FAT (Featured Art Tuesday) Artist Spotlight. I just love the name. It was such a special surprise when I received the note and I am humbly honored.

She was especially inspired by 'Morning Song' that I did a short time ago. I really loved all the wonderful things she wrote. And it gave me the opportunity to view other very talented Artists (using all sorts of mediums) and be inspired by them all, as well...just as she wanted it to happen. Christmas Time Is Busy Time!

With only a few days now 'til Christmas, I really have to wonder where the time went. I know I am probably not the only one who wonders this, every year, for certain! Months ago, while I was making my lists of all to do for Christmas, I thought I would certainly have plenty of time to get it all done and still enjoy the leisure of baking and entertaining. Hmmmm.....well, lets just say, at least the list was done on time!! LOL! Through it all, there have been many new pieces that have been completed this past month or so, many with new homes for them and more art on the way. I have really enjoyed them all, as I always do. Several pieces allowed me to try out some new techniques, and the feedback was more than positive! That is always a plus!

Commissioned 'Pineapple' 24" x 30" Acrylic on Gallery Canvas SOLD TYG

This piece was commissioned for Kim who wanted the whimsy found in my 'Dream' painting, but tamed down and colors changed to accommodate her Tommy Bahama style home...and, well, her husband! Loved the challenge. Thought a pineapple would be perfect and off I went. The fun of this painting is knowing there is an entire painting underneath the finished painting.

This is the under painting of the 'Pineapple' piece. I always get to this part and think, 'boy, this is fun! I could leave it just like this'! Then I have a moment of anxiety as I start to paint over it and then excitement creeps in. Lots of excitement. There's really nothing planned other than the colors and the subject matter. The rest is pure chance really (maybe, a bit of talent, too). Kim - and her husband - really loved the final piece! That's the part that makes my heart sing.

Handmade Holidays

Well, the Holidays are sneaking up on me...AGAIN! and we are in Handmade Mode here at our house.
I am always in handmade-mode because it's what I do for a living, but the kids and I really try to work on some handmade gifts and decorations every year for the holidays. Hannah has a little business she calls Hannah's Sweet Treats in which she makes delicious and easy chocolate covered pretzel rods that she decorates with candies and sprinkles. I started this with her many years ago when she was about 5 to help teach her kitchen skills and how special handmade gifts are. Now her little brother joins in and helps make them. It's great family time. We are all working on several projects for gifts right now and the studio shows proof of that! And every year I am blessed with new ornaments for the tree that are handmade by the kids. I treasure them the most! I really love this time of year and look forward to the many handmade creations that we send out and receive from loved ones and friends.

Finished Dream

Painting and drawing and sewing...Oh My!! Boy, has it been busy around here! I realized I had never posted the finished 'Dream' painting, so here it is. (Will come back later to post the many other things I have been working on.)

I really enjoy this style of painting...and for me, it's a way for me to get a bit messy and less restricted! Necessary for a 'Type A' personality such as mine. The toughest part for me is creating this cool underpainting and then having to paint over it. I showed the underpainting in the last post which I think could probably be hung 'as is', if you wanted. Then it's time to block out the background and enhance the images/shapes that are left over to show depth and interest. The best part is adding all the whimsical features. (See final piece at top of post)

Almost anything goes at this point. The main thing is to have fun...and it is GREAT FUN!

Halloween So Soon?

August, September....doesn't quite feel like Halloween yet, especially in Florida where the heat index is continually off the charts. But there are some sure signs everywhere that Halloween is creeping closer! Well, I certainly didn't want to be left out!! I actually caught the flu pretty bad and was laid up in bed for about a week and that allowed me some time to work on some little pieces (I rarely had the strength to do even that). Halloween was the subject that stuck around.

I have so many papers, an addiction really. I love paper. This sweet little owl in the dark of night was created with white Sakura Gelly Roll pen on black Wausau acid free 100lb cover. I simply love the way the white looks on the black paper. I have some others using this style to post but still need to take the pictures. Will work on that later today.

Just a quick update on the Football Mural that I did a couple months ago. The kids and I went to visit Sharie and Steve recently and I got the chance to see the mural room in all it's glory. WOW! I have to admit it was pretty impressive. It looks great!

They really loved how it all turned out and that makes me so happy! I really look forward to the next big mural project that lay ahead.

The kids are finally back in school, so I'm trying to get back to my postings and uploads. Although I found time to create, I just never could find the time to upkeep my blogs and stores for the last couple weeks. But I am back now and ready to get busy! In the midst of all the chaos of getting them ready for 2 different schools, I was able to work on a couple ACEO's that I really enjoyed doing.

ACEO Etsy Street Team Swap

I have been waiting to be able to post this for about a week or so now, and finally, I get to! The ACEO Street Team had a recent ACEO (ATC) swap and the subject matter for the swap was Mermaids. I had just joined the group and thought, what the heck, I'm gonna jump right in and join in on the swap! Really glad I did. It was great fun! My first ACEO (ATC) swap actually.

This is the mermaid that I did, which was done with pen and india ink and watercolors. I knew I was on the right track when my 5 year old, Nathaniel, came to my drawing table and said "Wow Mom...that Mermaid painting is really good". When your kids like what you do...nothing else matters! LOL.
The ACEO (ATC) I received was this cute little crow mermaid created by Stacy with MagicLoveCrow. Her Etsy shop is filled with all things crow! Very cute stuff, too. This was great fun and I can't wait for the next swap!

I can't stop! I can't! It's crazy! I am officially an ACEO addict. I have really loved this form of art for quite a while now because it allows me to create just about anywhere! The ACEO Challenge - Balloon Theme

Since joining the ACEtsy Street Team, recently, I have had the opportunity to participate in a couple swaps and challenges. I have really enjoyed all of it. They are a great group! I can't show you the ACEO I did for the swap because they are all still in transit, but the subject was Mermaids. I really look forward to receiving mine! As soon as everyone receives theirs, I will post mine and the one I received. Can't wait.

The ACEO Challenges' theme was Balloons. You could submit up to 3, so I did! I really wanted to step it up a bit and thought I would make mine a bit dimensional, if you will.

They were all done with watercolors and pen and ink on 180 lb. watercolor paper. I have to say they look so great in person and I really enjoyed making these, that I have several more on my drawing table ready to be cut and mounted. Here's a teaser....

Alive - New Illustration

Just finished a new illustration called 'Alive'.

It is 9" x 12" on Acquarello Artistico Extra White 140 lb watercolor block, using watercolors, india ink in 3 colors...black, sanguine and warm gray). I so love this watercolor paper. When I finished it and looked at it, I felt like it was actually breathing, like it was alive! It's rather warm and colorful in person really. And fun to do!

This is how it started, with a watercolor wash dictating the design. Some more ideas are brewing using this technique so I imagine there will be more to come using this concept.

As of today, I am proud to be a member of the ACEtsy/EtsyACEO Street Team, which is a group of Etsy Artists who create ACEO's. ACEO stands for 'Art Cards, Editions and Originals' and they have one essential rule...they must be 3.5" x 2.5" in size, the same as a trading card. ACEO cards are a fun, affordable way to collect art that you can either frame or store in a trading card album for years of enjoyment and it's quite the craze! Although I have only introduced myself, I will soon be uploading my ACEO's. I did get some new work onto Etsy today though!

'Feuillage'

I have diligently tried to post this recent work for the last few days but something always got in the way. So, finally, here it is...

This sweet frame, called 'Feuillage' meaning leaf or foliage in french, is an art piece I had recently completed in the wood burning technique I had described in a previous post.

The frame size is almost 8"x8" and the colors are so pretty in person, it actually sparkles in the light. So when I manifest the new camera of my dreams, I am sure I will be able to capture it perfectly. Can't wait for that!

A little pen and ink I worked on today while it rained and rained.
I love the rain. It feels sort of storybook to me and it's certainly helping with the heat 'round here. I hope to add the color tomorrow....stay tuned.

Dreams And New Shop

Well, here it is. The new project(s) that I have been working on.

As I mentioned in the last post, this has been something I have had creating in my mind for such a long time...for years really. In fact I have quite an assortment of unfinished wood items that I have collected over the years...just waiting for me to get started.

After I hand draw the images onto the wooden piece, I wood burn the image into it, which has afforded me a couple little burns too. (Note to self....will need special gloves)

After that, I stain each portion and then proceed to paint it. My goal is to incorporate inspirational words and additional wooden elements for a bit of whimsy.

Lastly, I seal it with a non-yellowing varnish to protect it for generations to come!

I have a few other pieces completed as well and will have to get those uploaded tomorrow. In lieu of this new venture, I have also opened a new Etsy shop for this type of work called..... Divine Design Too! Make sure to check it out!

Zeus - The Gentle Giant

Spending so much time in the studio can get lonely sometimes...unless you have friends like mine that come to visit..........

This is Zeus. My kids rescued him a couple years ago when he was very tiny and scared. He is actually a rather large cat now and has a bold and beautiful stature. Most cats who come upon him will back up, fearing his presence....but the truth be known, he is just a gentle, sweet giant. Quiet and soft and loving. When confronted, he has no desire to fight. Instead, he will turn and walk off slowly. He's not a fighter, he's a lover. He prefers to sleep in bed with me or my daughter at night....with his head on a pillow and follows quite a routine every day. And when he looks at you, there is such a tenderness. We are so blessed to have him in our family.

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, self-control....

The Football Mural

Most who know me, know that football is not my thing...so when I was contacted about doing a football mural for a teenager...I of course thought, uhh ohh! Let's just say, I know a lot more about football now than I did before...LOL. The story behind all this was so wonderful, too. Sharie and Steve wanted to surprise their teenage boy with a mural for his room while he was away at football camp. About 13 months ago, he gave up his room to his grandmother when her house burned down and this was in the midst of her recovering from cancer and the passing of the grandfather, too. It must have been such a difficult time for them all. So this gesture for their son was to show him gratitude for what he gave up for the family. What a wonderful gift.

The best part is that I was able to meet 2 of the most beautiful people anyone would be blessed to come to know. Sharie and Steve's generosity to me and my children was extraordinary. They are kind and loving from deep down and this project was a pleasure.

Their son was certainly surprised when he got home, having no idea what was behind his door. The football player is Tim Couch and those in the stands were renditions of their family. And Sharie made sure that the bedspread, curtains and pillows were all of the Cleveland Browns, too. I have been blessed to have been part of this wonderful gift!

....It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Etsy Story is Open!

The new Etsy store is open! Finally! Long overdue, I must admit. We moved since I last wrote, so that didn't help much, but I will have to say I can see the light again. Very few boxes are left, thank goodness. Many things in the works right now and will elaborate further at a later date, but for now, I am uploading items to the new store and am very excited about this new venture. My camera is not playing nice for the most part but it will just have to do for now. Note to self: buy a new camera...a great camera! Can't wait!

These are just a few of the items in the store right now. I have had such a blast making them and have received some wonderful feedback/requests from all walks of life, everywhere! They are all illustrated/hand painted and are sealed with a very thick resin that makes it look like its under glass. The pendant charm is wood and the necklace is sterling silver. And the colors are beautiful....my camera and re-touching just....well, lets just say, didn't do it justice.

So Much To Tell.....

Okay. I know. It's been like...forever since I posted last. I know. I should be ashamed of myself! And I am! I'm sorry! The only excuse I have is that I have been ridiculously busy! That's a good thing, right? I know...too bad...still, no excuse. I'll try to do better. Promise.

So, how about a recap of some of the happenings lately....

My daughter Hannah won 1st Place in the county for her poem she wrote at the Pride and Patriotism event held at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall. I am so proud! I will certainly post her poem so all can read at a later date.....

my little guy, Nathaniel, turned 5 years old......

made some Christmas gifts with the kids for friends and family.....

gave some gifts to kids around the world....and then Santa brought too many gifts in return....

my sister and her family from New York came to visit. Wish it lasted longer.....got addicted to some pen and ink pieces.....

I've been pretty busy getting all the extras taken care of so I can get it all up and running. Goodness, there is so much more to tell....but will just have to wait till next time.

Creativity...It's Really Ok

Getting back on track after several days away on a little 'mini Halloween vacation' with some friends (I'll try to post pics later today) and this morning, I accidentally came across this amazing and moving video that simply blew me away! I will admit that my emotions poured. The amazing writer Elizabeth Gilbert, who wrote the #1 NY Times Best Selling Memoir EAT, PRAY, LOVE speaks at the 2009 TED conference in this video. I remember seeing her on Oprah several years ago when the book originally came out and she inspired me tremendously then! I never ended up reading the book...but am now committing to reading it!! Sit back and enjoy...

Sammy and Marshmallow

Now that I'm living in the world of healthy again.....well, almost healthy, I guess it's time to get back to blogging and creating. Let me just say, I do not like being sick! And I have to be really sick to even consider being noted as sick in the first place....and believe me....I was!! About a week ago, I seemed to have developed a nice case of strep throat that was enhanced with fever, body aches, cough and congestion (that started to get pretty serious) and an overall weakness that left me....well....pathetic. Not fun! But I seemed to have recovered, for the most part, and am back in the saddle again! Woo Hoo! Prior to getting sick though, I had actually started a small painting that I wanted to do about/for my daughter, Hannah. Perhaps even a 'series' of sorts....we'll see. Anyway, Hannah is such a beautiful young girl and has a gentle, loving spirit and especially has an enormous love for nature and animals. Well, a little over a year ago, she was given 2 gerbils for her birthday that she lovingly named Sammy and Marshmallow. Her first real pets. And......we also have a beautiful white cat named Zeus............

Well, without going into detail, let's just say Zeus and Marshmallow had a run-in of sorts. It wasn't pretty! And then, as gerbils do, Sammy died several months later as well. Hannah still talks about them fondly, so I wanted to include them in my little painting. She is actually writing a book called The Adventures of Sammy and Marshmallow in which she is quite the talented writer, especially for a 10 year old. I told her I could illustrate it for her. How unique would that be! This little painting is 8x10, done in acrylics and was so much fun to do. Not my usual type of work but enjoyed it just the same. I may play with this idea a little more and see what I can come up with. You just never know.......

During my recent episode of being sick, we were blessed here in Florida with our first few days of cold weather (actually got into the 50's). I didn't get to enjoy it much, sadly, due to being totally incapacitated....but the kids couldn't wait to spend their time outside and soak it all in!

I had the windows open (love that!) and for the first time, probably, ever....they were quiet outside. Hmmmmm......had to get up and take a look. They had taken several blankets out of the van that we use for picnics, laid them out in the front yard, loaded up a handful of toys and books and just hung out together. Quietly, none-the-less. It was soooo very sweet. I didn't want it to end. They really didn't want to come back inside.

It's amazing really, how a gorgeous day of cool weather brings out such beauty!!! What a blessing!

Welcome Autumn

Even though our days here are still reaching above the 90's, with humidity giving us some 100's, there are very few things around that give the necessary clues that October is here and Autumn is upon us. You won't find leaves in multitudes of colors on branches and on the ground, you won't see anyone in sweaters or jackets or find piles of firewood waiting its turn in the fireplaces. No, you won't find these things....but you will find pumpkins!

Our church, Grace United Methodist Church, sells pumpkins every year and after service this Sunday, the kids and I spent some time in the pumpkin patch. The pumpkins are so beautiful this year. Such a huge collection in every shape and size. Hannah and Nathaniel were so excited as they ran up and down the aisles trying to find that perfect pumpkin.

Nathaniel didn't want the biggest pumpkin though....he wanted the smallest! He kept holding it up to his cheek repeating "oh, you are soooo cute"! It was so very sweet. The colors everywhere were very inspirational, too. So many beautiful oranges, yellows, reds, greens and browns. It's often hard to get into the seasonal inspirational mood since we basically have just one season here....hot! I so look forward to heading a bit north and experiencing the changing of the seasons. Teacher, Teacher

Just call me teacher! I am so excited about a new venture that has entered my world recently. I was on my way into one of my addiction stores for some supplies, Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Store (yes, they carry a lot of art supplies too), I happened to notice a little sign stating they were needing an artist to teach painting and drawing classes. Hmmmm....this sounded like a possibility. I have often been told I should teach art classes (and have at many a casual settings) and although I am still learning more and more every day, I am sure I would have something to offer. So I met with Ann, the delightful education director and after some discussion and examples of my work...I was in! I'll be working as an independent and although there is a schedule in place already, no one has signed up for the painting classes yet due to their lack of teacher. But that should change soon! There will be your basic painting and One-Stroke painting classes and then I will also offer, what they call, trend classes. Sort of a specialized class. This will be one of the trend classes I'll be offering...

It uses a combination of media, embossing powders and watercolors, which are both great fun to use. The image can be created freehand, from a template or even rubber stamps into many things such as this Christmas card, or framed artwork, ornaments, and decorations. The possibilities are endless.

The embossing actually creates a masking, of sorts, which makes the watercolor process extremely simple! This is a project for even the beginner, believe it or not.

And the final piece has a beautiful, sort of, batik or silk painting look. The embossed areas create a dimension and shine when the light passes it. It's really very beautiful.

When I brought it to the store and Ann was mounting it for display, several bystanders were giving quite a few oohs and aahs and when they found out even a beginner could do this, they became interested in the class!!! Can I get a Woo-Hoo?! Off to a good start! Well, it's time to get back to work. I'm in the process of finishing several pieces for other classes right now, so once done, I'll post those too. Art On Vintage Bible Pages

Yes, believe it or not....I'm back, all in the same night! WooHoo! Don't expect this to happen again for sure. Many who know me, know I love books, old books especially. There is something very exciting and mysterious to me about a book. The paper, the binding, the story that lay between the pages. Older books are often so beautiful in its text styles and covers, which is what inspired me recently to use pages from vintage books for my art.

I was originally inspired by a vintage bible I have that is falling apart, with torn pages, etc. It wasn't able to serve its original purpose, but hopefully I could help the pages stay alive (my apologies for the not-so-great photos.) Several of these were 'test pages' of sorts because I wasn't really sure how different medium would take to the pages, especially with the fragile nature of the paper.
I was surprised though. Even watercolors worked well. I also used acrylics, ink and colored pencils. Then I thought perhaps I could create a further message within the text of that page so there were random words within the page or art that I left open, so together it created a message. I'm going to have to scan these and get better images so I can use for prints.
I'm going to continue to work on this concept and see what transpires and I'll post more when done. I really think it's unique and could be quite beautiful.
There is even more to post, but I am just going to have to wait until later. I still have much to finish so I need to get busy with that too. Until we meet again, Blessings to you.

Painting And Drawing And Creating.....Oh My!

Painting and drawing and creating....oh my! Painting and drawing and creating.....oh my! We're off to see the wi.....oops, sorry about that. Got a little crazy, there. Well, let's just say, it's been busy around here lately! Many new ventures are in the works (more info later) and there have been a lot of creating going on. I am in my 'happy place' for sure!

This is a great little project that I just finished 'just for me'! You see....I have an artist pen (and pencil) problem....urhhh....addiction! And I know it will get even bigger as time goes on. It's a sickness! I have been looking for some time now, for a sort of 'holder' of sorts to store them all in. Something that will hold them flat (or preferable at a slight angle), has dividers for the many types of pens/markers and a convenient size to sit on my drawing table. Not to be found! Well, I've been left no choice...I guess it's time to make it myself! I had bought these great little wooden boxes a while back, that I had planned on using with images of my work. But when I looked closer, I realized they were perfect for my little project! I can still get more, so my other idea can still happen.

After sanding them, gluing them all together (with a small lift to give it a slight angle), and spraying them with a sealant, it was time to turn it into 'something special'. Once I started, I couldn't stop. I had so much fun with this.

It was done with a black sharpie and contains some special words.......

and Create!! I really like the way it turned out and it was a blast to do. Not only that, but I get to keep it. Love that! I really think I'm going to use this concept on some further pieces too. We'll just have to see. I still have to get the photos together of some of the other pieces I have been working on, but here is a new pendant necklace I just finished. Well, almost finished.

I still have to add a layer of resin, but for the most part, it's finished. I've worn it a few times for feedback and I received many, many comments...all positive. It doesn't really show it in the photo, but the color comes from underneath and the black lays on top, so it has a very unique dimensional look. It measures about 3.75 inches across. It's a real fun piece to wear. Looks like I'll be making quite a few more. Gotta go for now. Until next time....Blessings!

Busy, Busy, Busy!

Well, I'm back. Got a bit off course for a while when my little Nathaniel came down with pneumonia. There were concerns of more serious issues as well, so he was my #1 focus for a while. He's better now, but they're going to watch him closely over the next several months. Then school restarted, Hannah in the 5th grade and Nathaniel in pre-K. It was a wonder there was time to create at all, but there was. There are so many projects that I have needed to post and I'm going to try to play a little 'catch-up'. Not sure if I'll get them all posted today, but I will certainly try! Not off to a good start though, I spent most of today just trying to get everything off my camera and sorted through. Boy, do I need a new camera. My computer wasn't playing nice today either. Egad! Okay, here we go....let's see...well for starters, some time ago, me and my daughters' group leader at church were talking and somehow, after all this time, we realized she and I had never formally introduced ourselves to each other. We had talked many times though. Well, much to our amazement....we both have the same name (first AND last!). I almost fell over! And here's the clincher....she's attending college to be an artist!! God works in mysterious ways!Well, she contacted me later for a project she was working on with her class at FGCU. They were collecting artwork to donate to a thrift store in Naples that benefits a shelter for abused women and children. The objective was to raise awareness about abused women and children, provide funds to support an organization that helps these women and children and to demonstrate a way in which the art community can contribute to a cause. What a great project. I did a quick watercolor and printed it with the scripture Matthew 6:2 5-32 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life....". Somehow, I thought this was a message for this organization. Having been in an abusive relationship, God's promise that He was there and would take care of me and my children gave me the courage needed to make some very difficult choices during that time. Some alarming statistics from just this shelter last year....the two thrift stores have accounted for over 30% of the revenue for the shelter, the shelter answered 4,652 crisis hotline calls, developed 6,459 safety plans with adult and child victims of domestic violence, educated 8,689 individuals through one or more of the educational programs and provided more than 14,000 days of shelter. And this is just one shelter in one city. Most think it's easy to 'just leave' or call for help, but I can tell you, it's at times impossible. So these numbers only represent those that took a leap of faith and called out for help. There are many that never do! I'm so glad I got to participate in this great project and donate something.This is another graphic watercolor that I finished at that time, too. It measures 6"x6". Below is a sneak peak into a big project I'm finishing now. More to come on this later.....

I still have a lot of pics to take so I can post some of the other finished pieces. Let's hope my camera cooperates! If all goes well, I just may get it all posted tonight.....okay, well, it sounds good in theory! 'Till we meet again.....

Gallery Time

The day has come....I have some work in a gallery now!
A long time waiting. Very exciting and I look forward to others in the near future, too! The new gallery in Cape Coral has this piece and will have a few pendants too, if I can finish them in the next day or so, before the grand opening this Saturday. The water lily is a 18 x 14 acrylic painting and I'm really pleased at the finished piece. I've received so much positive feedback so far, so my anxiety is finally subsiding. As soon as the pendants are finished, I'll post those too. Well, it's time to paint....

So many projects lately. A lot to tell, but my computer is acting strange today....so I'm not sure how much I'll get posted and it's quite late....urrhhhh....I mean early. Let's start with Elvis. Well, Grandma loves Elvis! And I mean really loves Elvis! She's mentioned more than once how she would love to turn her spare bedroom into her Elvis Room. She lives in the same house since her kids were small and I don't think it's been painted since then either! There were posters and AC/DC stickers and writing on the walls and I was certain to have my hands full, but it was time for The Elvis Room. I've redesigned many rooms for people throughout the years and was looking forward to this one. I really wanted to keep the cost down so I had to get creative! Painting the room was the worst of it! The primer first was absolutely necessary with the very unusual deep blue that filled every inch! I found Behr primer in the clearance section at Home Depot for $5 which was a great start. Had them tint it, which helped the final coat of regular paint! Of course painting the 6 foot Elvis silhouette was the fun part. It's the first thing you see when you enter the room. Found a great oak lamp from Target at the Thrift Store for $3 and the lamp shade for 5o cents. Painted the lamp black, recovered the shade, and even decoupaged Elvis on the pull-chain. Too cute! WalMart had some red plastic bowls in the shape of stars from the 4th of July on sale for $1 each and knew I could create something unique with them. Found a beautiful solid wood double dresser at the Salvation Army Thrift Store...well it wasn't so beautiful at first, but I could see it's beauty underneath. Talked them down from $85 to $40, what a deal! Found a great solid red comforter on sale at WalMart (thank goodness for the back-to-school sale) and then off to the sewing machine. Found some beautiful upholstery fabrics for about $1 a yard at JoAnn Fabrics including pleather! (pretend leather) A few extras and we were set. Once Grandma got used to the idea and accepted the chaos.....the work began. Took almost 3 full days with some help from my 15 year old neice Kayla. She was such a big help and she really enjoyed it, too. It would have taken much longer without her, for certain! Here are some before and after photos of the room and dresser. I was exhausted, but it was worth it. I will sew some more pillows to take on future visits, but for now, it does the trick! Grandma loved it, although she couldn't make out the 6 foot Elvis face on the wall yet....she thinks she sees it, but isn't quite sure yet. Oh well......I'm sure she'll 'see' it soon enough!

Don't Forget The Logo

I was talking to my friend this evening and she brought up that one of my pieces could be used for someones logo. Well, it got me thinking about the many logos I've done in the past, including a few recently that I had never posted. I tend to separate graphic work and illustrative/painting work and forget to include the graphic work here on the blog. Eventually, I'll get it all on the website as my full portfolio, but hey, I can note it here, too! The Ashlee Nicole Photography logo, I just completed recently and she loved it. She accepted the very first proof....I love it when that happens! Wing City Grille was the same way, as well as a few others. It's a great feeling when a client gives you basic input on what they're looking for, and after listening closely, you create something that they love the moment they see it. It doesn't always happen that way, but it's great when it does! It's time to get back to some painting....till next time.

Bee Happy!

Finished the bee pendant, no catastrophe with the resin and the client really liked the final piece....all is good! I will admit though, I held my breathe with the resin.....probably lifted the cup that I use to protect it while it cures, at least 25 times. Whew! Bee Happy! :) I am also pretty happy with the packaging card that I created to use for the pendants. I have some other pendants under way, as well as some other paintings, too. Slowly but surely, my inventory is growing. I have waited for so long to be in a place where I could paint and create, every day, all day and it's glorious! Thank you Jesus!!! I prayed for God's will in my life for a while now and then all heck broke loose! Be careful what you pray for!!! It can often be scary at first because your life as you know it can be radically changed. Can't wait to see what happens next! School will be ending pretty soon and the kids will have a few activities here and there for summer vacation, but otherwise, they will be here with me while I work....Egad! There will certainly be a lot to juggle. No problem, I am woman...

Sea Of Fun

Busy, Busy, Busy! Love it when I'm busy. So much has been accomplished since last post. The biggest thing, I think, is that I just bought an unbelievable new printer to print my work with. I have been doing a lot of research trying to find the right professional printer that, first, I could afford and, second, was still going to give me the quality needed for the necessary archival needs. I certainly am not going to have happy customers if my prints start fading over time! Well, I found the printer and it is remarkable! The HP Photosmart Pro B8850, large format photo printer. It uses the Vivera HP pigment inks that are engineered to resist fading for over 100 years! It uses 8 ink cartridges and produces AMAZING colors. I am so pleased with it. Can't wait to get everything scanned, printed and ready to go. Yippee! Working on a lot of artwork too. Some good, some not so good. Had someone that wanted a pendant for his wife for Mothers Day, finished it on Friday, Saturday put the resin on, checked on it later that day and it looked like goop! Not sure what happened but it totally ruined the entire piece. Sunday was Mothers Day and I couldn't fix the piece in time. Will be re-painting the piece and try to get it to him ASAP and I am so glad he understood. Sometimes, these things happen, but hate it when it does! I also finished this colorful watercolor that I had started and I have to say, watercolors are soooo great to work with. I just love them. You don't have to have a lot of 'set-up' which is so great when life is busy. This one was so much fun to do and the kids really wanted to watch the progress, which was nice. Have a few more that I should be finishing soon and will post when done. Well, onto more painting....till next time....

Every Day Is Earth Day!

What a beautiful day it is here in Florida. Would be a shame for anyone to have to spend it indoors! Today being Earth Day brings to mind further what a shame it would be if our children could not enjoy nature and our world as we know it now. It's ever changing, and not for the good! The kids and I have been working hard as a family on little things that can help our world for some time now. Everything from recycling, using re-usable bags for shopping, turning off and unplugging appliances when not in use, exchanging the old light bulbs with the new energy efficient ones (can be costly so we do a couple at a time instead of all at once), and many other things, as we can. We spend a lot of our playtime/weekends outside enjoying nature and they are so in love with the trees, the waters, the bugs, the animals, all that is outside, just as I do! What a blessing. The old Native American proverb is so true..."We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we BORROW it from our children". I used this quote in one of my ACEO cards and would like to use it again. I'm not sure if I like how it turned out, so I will probably do another and focus on the lettering a bit more. Happy Earth Day everyone, and remember....EVERY DAY IS EARTH DAY!

Spring Break and ACEO Addictions

I feel like it's been an eternity again since my last post...although I think about posting constantly! Welcome to the life of an independent/freelance artist-mom of 2 young children-Type A personality, woman! Whew! I have had so many projects going on, not to mention we just finished with our little Spring Break staycation of fun in the sun. The kids and I spent time at the beach a lot, doing some hiking, picnics, and just enjoying life together. Hannah was off from school for over a week so I put the computer away and the kids and I had our little vacation here....I mean, hey, we live in Florida....who needs to fly away somewhere when we live in vacation capital. Spent some time with friends, spent Easter with family, it was great!

I may have put the computer away, but I couldn't put the drawing and painting away! I wanted to do some smaller pieces that were not so cumbersome, so I could take them with me while watching the kids play, or during quiet times, and still be marketable. I have always loved working in pen and ink and started some ACEO (Art Cards, Editions and Originals) Trading Cards. These cards have one main rule - they are 3.5 inches by 2.5 inches - the size of a trading card. They were originally made to be traded. And while artists were happy trading them, the public showed interest and had no way to get them. So a group of artists finally made their cards available for sale and it's become quite the explosion. I just love them and so enjoy creating them. Affordable for anyone, regardless of whether it's an original or numbered edition. Here are a few I've done and I'll post more once I get them photographed. (I have quite a few, some are inked and just need the final painting). I also started a series of crosses and have received a lot of interest in them, so I think I'll create a few more and offer them as sets as well as individual pieces. I think they would look very interesting in a long frame as a complete set. I like these as black and whites, but also want to paint them (ahhh, the dilemma), so I have to work out the details of that. Not sure how many will be printed in the editions yet, we'll see. Well, it's late, much to do tomorrow. And will try very hard to post more often! I should be ashamed....

Hangin' In There......

It seems like it's been forever since my last posting. Better late than not at all, I guess. I really started to get rather busy and as luck would have it, I came down sick and everything came to halt. I don't think I have been that sick since I was pregnant with Nathaniel. I won't go into the gory details, but nothing got done anywhere for almost 2 weeks. Feeling much better now...thank the Lord! Just finished this pendant and it feels good to get a paintbrush in my hands again. I still need to finish the water lily (that's next) and I hope to finish it in the next day or so. I will be donating it to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida 2009 Wishmaker's Ball that is coming up in a couple weeks, so I really do have to finish it! It will be used as one of the auction pieces for that night. (I should have time to get the glicees done, too.) I am also donating all of the graphic design work of the printed pieces for the event (invitations, posters, program, etc). It is a great cause and am glad I can help out in some way. Well, I have some new ideas for my pendants and am sketching them out now....but first thing's first....onto the lily.....

Pendants In The Making

Here are some of the pendants I have been working on and have many more in the making. They are one of a kind, original, handpainted, wearable pieces of art! I am not sure if I am going to offer these as pendants only, or whether to create the full necklace. Most likely, pendants only. This way, I will have more time to paint. Each one is signed/dated and has a different scripture on each one as well. Still working out the details of the packaging but will most likely have the full scripture included. Will post the others once completed and get them photographed.

Getting Back On Track

This past week has been sooooo busy and it feels GREAT! Although I am getting so much accomplished, I still need to set up an actual timeline schedule for myself so I can stay on track. Especially when I'm working on my artwork, I tend to slip into the 'no time zone' and lose all perspective of actual time. It's a new world for me, working completely as an independent and working out of my home office, with the laundry and household cleaning staring at me at the same time. This is the canvas I have been working on this past week (not quite finished, will probably finish in the next day or two) as well as some of my pendants (will post those images later today). I have been looking into Etsy.com and a few other resources to get my pendants out there. Etsy is great! I have been reading some of the blogs and stories on Etsy and there are so many success stories. Some amazing artisans with very similar stories as my own and it has ultimately changed their lives! I would love the good fortune of being a featured seller some day. Stay tuned, you just never know. My plan today is to update my blog and finish setting up all the extras available. There are many links to other artisans that I really want to post and get the ball rolling. Sadly, so much of this part has been new to me for too long, but I'm a quick learner. The 'old' 9 to 5 life didn't leave a lot of time for all the necessary extras, especially when my world is always dictated by motherhood first and foremost! Hannah (9) and Nathaniel (4) are my greatest creations of course. This is such a wonderfully, exciting time for me. I can't wait to see what's next.....

Giving Birth To A Blog

Almost there! My blog is actually starting to look like a blog...well, I'm getting closer anyway. I'll start posting works that I have done in the past and works in progress, so that everyone can take a look. I have wanted to get my blog going for sooooo long now, that I'm having a bit of a 'giving birth euphoria' going on right now...I know, call me crazy. I'm working on my website too, so it's like giving birth to twins I guess. Just to make it clear, I have had the 'real' kids too (they are now ages 9 and 4), so I'm hoping that gives me permission to use the 'giving birth' euphemism.......lets hope so.
Here are a few pieces of my work to get us started. There are many more, I just need to get all the images together to post. I am working on a few pieces now as well. How many hours are in a day? It's all good.

Better Late Than Never

Well, the day has come - I am officially a blogger! And it's about time, I will have to say! I am looking forward to this next venture and am so excited to start documenting my progress in my creative world. My creativity explodes often AFTER HOURS, hence the name of my blog. And once it starts, it's hard to stop. If it wasn't for kids and responsibilities, I am sure I wouldn't eat or sleep for days once I started a project. It's an addiction! So, here goes.....may the addiction begin.
